The RYA series is Weissenberg’s own-brand hot air welding gun line — the RYA1600D with a digital temperature display and the RYA1600S with a simple rocker-switch control. Welding parameters for hand-held hot air welding are defined in DVS 2207-3 Supplement 1. Use these ranges as starting points, then confirm with a test weld on scrap material — actual values shift with ambient temperature, sheet thickness and travel speed.

RYA1600D or RYA1600S: Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose RYA1600D if you weld several materials and need repeatable, precise temperatures — the digital display lets you read, set and monitor the exact temperature for each job.
  • Choose RYA1600S if you want the simplest tool for routine work — same 1600 W performance with straightforward switch control.

Techniques for a Strong, Lasting Weld

  1. Prepare the joint: clean and prepare the welding surfaces using a method compatible with the material manufacturer’s recommendations; prepare the joint profile (typically a V-groove for rod welding) following the material manufacturer’s recommendation; keep rod and sheet dry — moisture causes porosity.
  2. Set and verify temperature: select the material temperature above and confirm with a test weld — the rod should melt and flow into the groove with a glossy surface.
  3. Tack first: tack-weld at several points along the joint to hold alignment before running the seam.
  4. Feed the rod at a comfortable angle: use a slight weaving motion to heat both groove walls evenly and keep a steady, even travel pace.
  5. Let the bead cool naturally: a bead cooled in a draft can develop centerline cracks.

For speed welding, fit a speed nozzle with matching welding rod; for overlap seams on sheets, use the wide-slot nozzle and follow with a silicone pressure roller while the material is still above its softening temperature. For applicable nonreinforced geomembrane seams, destructive peel and shear testing may be performed according to project QA/QC requirements and standards such as ASTM D6392.

Maintenance That Extends Service Life

  • Clean the nozzle while hot: scrape off melted plastic with a brass wire brush after each use — a blocked nozzle restricts airflow and overheats the element.
  • Keep the air intake clear: blow out the intake filter with low-pressure compressed air regularly; a clogged filter drops airflow and makes the motor run hot.
  • Cool before shutdown: reduce the temperature and let the fan run for a short period before switching off so the element cools gradually — thermal shock shortens element life.
  • Use the right nozzle: an undersized nozzle backs heat up into the tool and can burn out the heating element.
  • Store dry: keep the gun in its case in a clean, dry environment; check the power cord and plug before each use.
