Weissenberg RYG Series Geomembrane Welders: RYG700 vs RYG800 vs RYG900 vs RYG1200 — Complete Buying Guide

By Weissenberg Technical Team | 20+ years in plastic welding equipment manufacturing

If you're installing HDPE geomembranes — whether it's a landfill liner, a mining containment pad, or an aquaculture pond — you need a hot wedge welder that matches the thickness of your material and the scale of your project. The Weissenberg RYG series covers the full spectrum: six models from the lightweight RYG800 to the high-temperature RYG700. The RYG series is manufactured by Weissenberg and supported directly by our technical team. Weissenberg Store also offers Weldy equipment as an official Weldy distributor.

Quick Answer

  • Choose RYG800 / RYG800D for lightweight work and thin 0.2–1.5 mm liners.
  • Choose RYG900 / RYG900D for professional 1–3 mm landfill, reservoir and mining work.
  • Choose RYG700 when you need the widest thickness range and highest heating capacity.
  • Choose RYG1200 when digital temperature and speed monitoring is the priority.

1. The RYG Series Lineup at a Glance

All RYG welders use the same proven hot wedge technology — a heated copper/stainless wedge that travels between overlapping membrane sheets, melting and fusing them in a single pass. Every model produces a dual-track seam with an interior test channel that can support pressurized air-channel testing where applicable, such as ASTM D5820. Destructive peel and shear testing may be performed according to applicable project specifications and standards such as ASTM D6392 for nonreinforced geomembrane seams. The differences between models are in power, temperature range, and material thickness capability.

2. RYG700 — The High-Temperature Workhorse

The RYG700 is the most powerful model in the series, with a rated power of 2800W (2200W on 120V) and a maximum wedge temperature of 620°C — the highest in the RYG family. It welds HDPE, LDPE, PVC, and EVA geomembranes from 0.5mm up to 3.5mm thick, making it suitable for thicker geomembranes used in demanding mining and landfill applications.

Despite its power, the RYG700 weighs just 7.5kg with an aluminum case, offering a strong power-to-weight balance for field use. The 15mm × 2 dual-track seam with a 15mm test channel and 16cm overlap capacity makes it a genuine workhorse for demanding terrain.

Best for: Thick mining liners, large landfill caps, projects requiring high weld temperatures (up to 620°C).

3. RYG800 / RYG800D — Lightweight Precision for Thin Liners

At just 5kg with 800W power, the RYG800 is the most portable model in the RYG series. It's designed for thin geomembranes (0.2 – 1.5mm) in aquaculture ponds, irrigation canals, garden pools, and foundation waterproofing — applications where a heavy machine is overkill and physically tiring to operate.

The RYG800D adds a digital temperature display, letting operators monitor and adjust parameters with greater precision. Both versions produce a 12.5mm × 2 dual-track seam with a 12mm test channel and 10cm overlap capacity.

Best for: Fish/shrimp ponds, irrigation channels, thin liner repair work, light-duty waterproofing.

4. RYG900 / RYG900D — The Heavy-Duty All-Rounder

The RYG900 is the balanced choice for professional contractors. With 1800W (1650W on 120V) of power and a 50–450°C temperature range, it welds HDPE and other geomembranes from 1mm to 3mm thick — the sweet spot for most landfill liners, reservoir covers, and mining containment projects.

The 13kg machine produces a robust 15mm × 2 seam with a 15mm test channel and 12cm overlap. The RYG900D variant adds a digital temperature display, making it easier for operators to monitor settings and manually record welding parameters when required by the project QA/QC plan.

Best for: Municipal landfill liners, reservoir covers, mining containment, general heavy-duty contracting.

5. RYG1200 — Digital Dual-Display Versatility

The RYG1200 is the most operator-friendly model in the series, featuring separate digital displays for temperature and welding speed. It welds membranes from 0.2mm to 2.0mm, covering thin to medium applications, at speeds of 0.5–6.0 m/min.

With 1400W of power and a 15mm × 2 dual-track seam (15mm test channel, 12cm overlap), the RYG1200 is a versatile choice for contractors who handle a variety of membrane types across different projects and want precise digital control on every weld.

Best for: Contractors handling mixed membrane thicknesses, projects requiring precise digital temperature and speed control.

6. How to Choose the Right RYG Model

Your Project / Priority Recommended Model Why
Thin liners (0.2–1.5 mm), portability first RYG800 / RYG800D 5kg lightweight; precise control for thin membranes
1–3 mm heavy-duty landfill, reservoir & mining RYG900 / RYG900D 1800W with margin; 15mm dual seam for professional workload
Widest thickness range & highest heating capacity (0.5–3.5 mm) RYG700 2800W, up to 620°C, covers the thickest HDPE liners
Digital temperature + speed monitoring is the priority RYG1200 Dual displays; 0.2–2.0 mm range for mixed projects

8. Buyer FAQ

What is the difference between RYG800 and RYG800D?
The RYG800D adds a digital temperature display, so operators can read and adjust the set temperature directly on the machine. Welding performance and specifications are otherwise identical.

What is the difference between RYG900 and RYG900D?
Same story: the RYG900D adds a digital temperature display for easier parameter monitoring. Both handle 1–3mm membranes at 1800W.

Which RYG welder is best for 1.5 mm HDPE geomembrane?
1.5mm sits at the top of the RYG800 range (0.2–1.5mm) and the bottom of the RYG900 range (1–3mm). If you only weld 1.5mm and value portability, the RYG800 is enough. If you want more power headroom and expect thicker work later, the RYG900 is the safer long-term choice.

Can the RYG series produce dual-track seams for air-channel testing?
Yes. All RYG models produce dual-track seams with an interior test channel that can support pressurized air-channel testing where applicable, such as ASTM D5820.

Which model is best for landfill or mining projects?
For standard 1–3mm landfill and mining liners, choose RYG900 or RYG900D. If your project uses membranes thicker than 3mm or requires weld temperatures above 450°C, the RYG700 is the model to consider.

Do RYG welders work with PVC and EVA as well as HDPE?
Yes. All RYG models weld HDPE, LDPE, PVC, and EVA geomembranes within their rated thickness ranges.

Which RYG Geomembrane Welder Should You Buy?

Here's the short version:

  • Thin liners, light work → RYG800 / RYG800D
  • Professional 1–3 mm landfill, reservoir and mining jobs → RYG900 / RYG900D
  • Widest thickness range and highest heating capacity → RYG700
  • Digital temperature and speed monitoring as a priority → RYG1200

Every model is in stock and backed by a 1-year warranty and lifetime technical support. Not sure which fits your project? Message our online team on Weissenberg Store and we'll match you to the right welder based on your material thickness and job scale.
